El Niño Onset Time Affects the Intensity of Landfalling Tropical Cyclones in China

چکیده
In this work, we studied the influence of spring (SP) and summer (SU) El Niño events on landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) in China. The results showed that compared to SU years, average latitude TCs SP years shifted significantly southward TC intensity was stronger, especially post-landfall period. Additionally, more severe storm-level generated over South China Sea made landfall Meanwhile, southern had a greater intensity, but eastern were opposite. These changes during could be attributed favorable dynamical thermodynamical conditions, which are beneficial for maintaining duration after landfall. have important implications an in-depth understanding activities, as well disaster prevention mitigation.

Rainfall distribution of five landfalling tropical cyclones in the northwestern Australian region
Rain gauge data, satellite IR brightness temperature and radar-estimated rain rate for five tropical cyclones from the 2005–06 to 2009–10 seasons that made landfall along the northwestern coast of Australia are analysed. It is the first time that the spatial rainfall distribution of landfalling tropical cyclones in the southern hemisphere has been systematically investigated. It is found that t...
متن کاملRevisiting the maximum intensity of recurving tropical cyclones
Previous studies have indicated that recurving western North Pacific tropical cyclones, initially westward moving tropical cyclones that turn toward the east, often reach their maximum intensity close to the time of recurvature. Those results have often been cited in the literature and sometimes inferred to be valid in other tropical cyclone basins. This study revisits this topic in the western...
متن کاملChanges in Number and Intensity of World-wide Tropical Cyclones
Bayesian statistical models were developed for the number of tropical cyclones and the rate at which these cyclones became hurricanes in the North Atlantic, North and South Indian, and East and West Pacific Oceans. We find that there is small probability that the number of cyclones has increased in the past thirty years. The rate at which these storms become hurricanes appears to be constant. T...
متن کاملAugmentation of Early Intensity Forecasting in Tropical Cyclones
In this project, we develop an objective and automatic intensity estimator of Tropical Cyclones (TCs) based on satellite infrared (IR) imagery. The proposed methodology analyzes the TC’s shape or pattern to perform the intensity estimates, which will be available every 30 minutes (or depending on image acquisition availability) for the Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific and Western North Pacific b...
متن کاملThe “ Normality ” of El Niño
The amplitude of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) would be normally distributed if the coupled Pacific ocean-atmosphere were a linear system forced by Gaussian weather noise. Moment estimates of skewness and kurtosis demonstrate that this is not the case for monthly mean anomalies in Pacific sea surface temperatures during 1950-97. The noted predominance of El Niño events compared to La ...
